On this day in 1931 – Australian National Airlines’ airliner Southern Cloud, which had left Sydney for Melbourne at 8.30 a.m. with 6 passengers and 2 crew, was reported missing. The aircraft, was one of ten triple-engined aircraft which flew regular services within Australia.
An 18-day search by 20 aircraft failed to reveal its whereabouts.
This remained a mystery until 26 October 1958, when a worker on the Snowy Mountains hydro-electric project accidentally discovered the remains of the aircraft in mountainous terrain, 25 kilometres east of the direct Sydney-Melbourne route.

1920, Cologne, Germany: Werner Klemperer, comedian and actor, best known for his role as Colonel Klink on the television sitcom Hogan’s Heroes. He was also musically talented, being a violinist and an accomplished concert pianist Died 2000.
1931, Montreal, Quebec, Canada: William Shatner, actor, recording artist, and author famous for his portrayal of Captain James T Kirk of the USS Enterprise, in the television science fiction series Star Trek; also Star Trek: The Animated Series; and in seven of the subsequent Star Trek feature films from 1979 to 1994.
1936, Nairobi, Kenya: Roger Whittaker, singer-songwriter and musician with worldwide record sales of over 55 million. He is best known for his baritone singing voice and trademark whistling ability. Died 2023.
1948, Kensington, London, England: Andrew Lloyd Webber, composer of musical theatre who has achieved great popular success, and has been referred to as “the most commercially successful composer in history.”

1996, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.: Billy Williamson, aged 71. He was a steel guitar player for the group Bill Haley & Saddlemen and its successor, Bill Haley & Comets, from 1949 till 1963.
