6 March 2026

EVENTS on 6 MARCH;

On this day in 1917, a train on the Emu Bay Railway in western Tasmania was saved from disaster when it’s alert fireman caught a glimpse through some trees, of unsupported rails spanning the Ring River ahead.  After the train was quickly brought to a halt, it was discovered that the bridge had been washed away by floods.

In 1944, in Sydney, New South Wales, Antonio Agostini was charged with the murder of his wife, bringing an end to the investigation into the “Pyjama Girl” murder of 1934, which had begun after the body of a young woman was found in a culvert near Albury.
Agostini was found guilty of manslaughter, sentenced to six years’ imprisonment, but he was released and deported to Italy in 1948.

In 1958, construction of the first section of Hobart’s Brooker Highway, between Derwent Park Road and Risdon Road, was nearing completion, while earthworks were in progress on the section between Risdon Road and the city, including the Belle Vue Parade overpass.

In 1987 near Zeebrugge, Belgium , the British roll-on roll-off car and passenger ferry MS Herald of Free Enterprise capsized after leaving the port, with the loss of 193 lives.
The bow loading door had been left open, allowing the seawater to flood in.  This was the highest death-count of any peacetime maritime disaster involving a British ship since the sinking of the  RMS Empress of Ireland in 1914.
