► EVENTS ON 1 March;

In 1954
Adelaide was rocked by a severe earthquake which caused extensive damage throughout the city.

In 1957 in Hobart, Tasmania, whilst several hundred people attended an exhibition on fire precautions and viewed a film on bushfires in the Hobart City Hall, a fire broke out in the rear of the hall, which caused several hundred pounds worth of damage..

In 1964  At least three North Shore schools in Sydney banned Beatle-related clothing, haircuts and records – and banned pupils from singing Beatle songs around the school, and on the way to and from school.  Meanwhile, two butchers assistants donned Beatle wigs for a joke – and increased their employer’s takings substantially.

In 1966 The Soviet space probe Venera 3 crashed on the planet Venus and became the first spacecraft to reach another planet’s surface.

In 1975 Full-time colour television broadcasting was launched in Australia.

In 2006  Cosier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland – The remains of comedian Charlie Chaplin were stolen from a local cemetery by two unemployed migrants and held for ransom.  The culprits were apprehended two months later and Chaplin’s body was re-interred, surrounded by reinforced concrete.
