On this day in 1926 – The original National Park railway station opened on the Derwent Valley railway.

In 1936, Trains of tanker wagons were used to supply water to severely drought stricken areas of the Derwent Valley and Midlands.  

In 1952,  1870 mm of rain fell in one day in Cilaos, Reunion Island, setting a new world record.

In 1970, Amsterdam, Netherlands, All Kinds of Everything, sung by Dana (music and text by Derry Lindsay and Jackie Smith), won the Eurovision Song Contest 1970 for Ireland.

BORN:
 Harry Haag James, alias Harry James, in 1916, Albany, Georgia U.S.A.  He was a Big Band era bandleader, active almost continuously from 1939 till his death in 1983, at the age of 67.

BORN:  Albert Edward Calvert, alias Eddie Calvert, in 1922, Preston, Lancashire, England.  He was a trumpeter, who enjoyed his greatest successes in the 1950s. Calvert had his first British number one instrumental single in 1954, with Oh Mein Papa.  He died in 1978.

BORN:  Alan Bean, in 1932, Wheeler, Texas, U.S.A   He was the fourth man to set foot on the moon and Lunar Module Pilot of the Apollo 12 mission in 1969. He completed two moon walks and assisted crewmates Dick Gordon and Pete Conrad with lunar surface experiments, and with the installation of the first nuclear power generator station on the moon.  He died in 2018.

BORN: John Duttine, in 1949, Barnsley, Yorkshire, England  He is an  actor who has appeared in numerous television productions, including Doc Martin, Taggart, Midsomer Murders,  The Bill, and Dalziel and Pascoe.  He is best known for his role as Sergeant George Miller, in the TV drama series Heartbeat.
