FRIDAY MORNING RADIO, Edition 484, 9.00 ~ Midday AEST 22 August 2025

Easy listening, retro and recent releases not to be heard on mainstream radio throughout the morning, on the Derwent Valley’s own radio station.

LOOKING at some notable events on 29 August, in 1907, Quebec City, Canada, the Quebec Bridge, which was under construction, collapsed with the loss of 75 lives.
This bridge is a riveted steel truss structure 987 metres long, and 104 metres high, with cantilever arms supporting a 195 metre central structure, making a total centre span 549 metres wide.  It is still the longest cantilever span in the world.
The bridge was still under construction in September 1916, when second collapse occurred, claiming a further 13 lives.

In 1961, in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory – A Labor member of the House of Representatives, Mr Jim Fraser, accused the-then Australian Broadcasting Commission of having instructed one of their most popular announcers, to never more, quip or jest during his morning programme.

In 1992, in Sydney, New South Wales, the tunnel beneath Sydney Harbour opened to traffic.  At it’s deepest point, it is 25 metres below sea level.

► BORN THIS DAY…..
1915  in Stockholm, Sweden, Ingrid Bergman, actress who starred in many European and American films.  She won three Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards, and the Tony Award for Best Actress, and is ranked as the fourth greatest female star of all time by the American Film Institute.
Ingrid Bergman is particularly remembered for her role as Ilsa Lund in the 1942 movie Casablanca, a World War II drama which co-starred Humphrey Bogart.
It’s very unusual for someone to die on their birthday, but Ingrid also died this day in London, England, in 1982, aged 67.

1958 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, U.S.A.  – Ruth Lee Jones, alias Dinah Washington, African-American jazz/blues singer and pianist, cited as “the most popular black female recording artist of the ’50s.”  Died 1963.

► DIED THIS DAY…..
1987 in Tucson, Arizona, U.S.A.,  Lee Marvin, actor noted for his deep voice.  He appeared in many movies, including The Comancheros in 1961, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (in which he played the vicious outlaw Liberty Valance) in 1962, and Donovan’s Reef in 1963.
Lee Marvin is possibly best known for his role in the Western musical of 1969, Paint Your Wagon.  He was aged 63.

1992 near Mt Archer, Central Queensland, Graeme Strachan, nicknamed Shirley Strachan, rock singer from the Australian band Skyhooks.   He was also a well-known radio and television presenter.
His nickname “Shirley” was acquired because of his long, curly hair, reminiscent of the child actress Shirley Temple.  He was aged 49.

Today’s photo – In view of the chilly weekend coming up in the Valley, I thought this pic of Mt Dromedary is appropriate, given that snow is expected at lower-than-usual levels.

Valley Sunrise Edition 848
0600 ~ 0900 AEST

During this edition, two chart-busters each hour, from the Top 40 charts of this week in 1974, and a mix of recent tracks from indie artists and other easy-listening music which you won’t hear on mainstream radio.

► LOOKING at some notable events on 24 August, in the year 79, the Roman Empire city of Pompeii was buried in volcanic ash up to 7 metres deep, during a cataclysmic eruption of Mt Vesuvius.  The site of Pompeii was lost for 1,500 years until a small section was uncovered in 1599.

It was another 150 years before additional excavations were made.  Numerous artifacts had been preserved over the centuries, including voids in the solidified ash, which once contained remains of human and animal victims of the eruption.  Plaster and resin casts of these voids show the exact position each victim was in, upon their death.

► In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the United States non-stop, from Los Angeles to Newark, New Jersey. She was also the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and set many other aviation records.

She was attempting to become the first woman to make an aerial circumnavigation of the world in 1937, when her aircraft disappeared over the Pacific Ocean.  No trace of the aircraft, or of her or her navigator, Fred Noonan, was ever found.  The pair were declared dead in absentia in 1939.

► And in 1989, Australian domestic airline flights ceased when the nation’s 1,640 pilots resigned en masse in a dispute over a new salary package, following a long period of wage suppression.  InterState air services were provided by RAAF and planes and pilots, by international flights.

► BORN on this day in 1947, Coventry, England, Rowena Wallace, Australian actress who has appeared in numerous productions since her television debut in 1968.

Also in show-biz,

► BORN on this day in 1949, in Lameroo, South Australia, Julie Moncrief Lush, alias Julie Anthony, soprano and entertainer, one time member of The Seekers after the departure of Judith Durham.  She is one of the most awarded Australian entertainers.

At the opposite end of the life span, DIED this day in 1978 in New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A., Louis Prima, singer, actor, songwriter, and trumpeter, known as the King of the Swing,  who rode the musical trends of his time, starting in the 1920s with his seven-piece jazz band, then successively leading a swing combo in the 1930s, a big band in the 1940s, a Vegas lounge act in the 1950s, and a pop-rock band in the 1960s.  He was aged 67.

► DIED this day in 1980 in London, England, Yootha Joyce, actress best known for her starring role as Mildred Roper in the sitcoms Man About The House and George And Mildred.  She was aged 53.

FRIDAY MORNING RADIO, Edition 483, 9.00 ~ Midday AEST 22 August 2025

Easy listening, retro and recent releases not to be heard on mainstream radio throughout the morning, on the Derwent Valley’s own radio station.

► LOOKING at some notable events on 22 August, in 1932, London, England – the British Broadcasting Corporation first experimented with television broadcasting.  Regular broadcasting on a limited scale began two years later.

In 1942, in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil declared war on Germany and Italy after the sinking of several Brazilian ships.

In 1949,  one of the world’s strongest earthquakes at 8.1 magnitude struck the sparsely populated Queen Charlotte Islands and the North-west coast of Canada.
It was felt throughout British Columbia and parts of Alberta, Washington State, Oregon, the Yukon and Alaska.  No deaths were reported, even though people and animals were knocked off their feet and there were landslides and other damage.

In 1962, Paris, France, an attempt was made to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle when his Citroen DS 19 car was targeted by sub-machine gun fire.  Neither de Gaulle, his wife, nor any of his entourage were seriously injured, whilst all the perpetrators were arrested.

BORN THIS DAY…..
1925 in Plaistow, Essex, England – Honor Blackman, actress known for the roles of Cathy Gale in The Avengers (1962–64) and of Bond girl Pussy Galore in the movie Goldfinger (1964). Died 2020.

1958 in Toowoomba, Queensland – Shane Withington, actor best known for playing surf life guard John Palmer in the soapie Home And Away, and also for his former role in the television series A Country Practice as nurse Brendan Jones.

DIED THIS DAY…..
2011 in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., Jerry Lieber, songwriter and record producer who, in conjunction with Mike Stoller, penned numerous hit records of the 50s and 60s, including famous tracks such as Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, Kansas City, Stand By Me and Lucky Lips.  Aged 78.

Today’s photo – A colonial-era homestead, known as Strathallan, near Tea Tree in southern Tasmania.  In 1914, tragedy struck when the then-owner’s daughter died in a railway level-crossing accident, a few kilometres away.

► LOOKING at some notable events on 15 August, Cologne, Germany – The foundation stone of Cologne Cathedral, was laid in 1248. Construction was halted 225 years later, in 1473, but re-commenced in the 19th century to the original plans.
It was ultimately completed 632 years later, in 1880.  The cathedral, which is 144 metres long with twin spires 157 metres tall, was hit by 14 bombs dropped from Allied aircraft during World War 2 air raids.  It miraculously survived unscathed, even though the rest of the city was destroyed.
Today, Cologne Cathedral is one of the most visited attractions in Germany, attracting around 20,000 people daily and it is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Register.

In 1945, in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory – Australia’s then Prime Minister Ben Chifley announced the end of the war with Japan.  The date is now known as “VP Day.”

In 1947,  a  massive scheme to divert the headwaters of the Snowy River for hydro-electricity and irrigation purposes was put before the Australian Federal Cabinet.  The proposed scheme involved seven major dams, over 100 kilometres of tunnelling through mountains, and inundation of several towns.

FRIDAY MORNING RADIO, Edition 481, 9.00 ~ Midday AEST

Easy listening, retro and recent releases not to be heard on mainstream radio throughout the morning, on the Derwent Valley’s own radio station.

LOOKING at some notable events on 8 August, in RADIO on this day in 1935, John Laws was born in Wau, Papua New Guinea.  Laws became an Australian commercial radio personality, his career starting at 3BO in Bendigo, Victoria, in 1953.

He later worked for several stations in Sydney, ultimately becoming a talk show host on 2UE.  He retired in 2007, but in 2010 returned to radio to host another talk show on 2SM.  He retired for the final time in November 2004.  John Laws, turns 90 today.

In 1950, in Melbourne, Victoria, a young radio announcer, John Bryan Kerr, was found guilty, on the basis of an unsigned confession, of the 1949 murder of 20 year old Elizabeth Williams.  He was sentenced to death, but this was later commuted to life imprisonment.
Protesting his innocence, Kerr served 14 years before being released, after which he moved interstate and became a successful businessman.  He died in 2001 and was posthumously pardoned after a deathbed confession by another man.

In 1991 in Gabin, Poland, a radio mast 646 metres high, at one time the world’s tallest construction, collapsed when it was struck by a strong gust of wind while a guy wire was being replaced.  It’s extreme height had been specified in order to broadcast Communist propaganda around the world.

► DIED ON THIS DAY…..
1959 in Alice Springs, Northern Territory – Albert Namatjira, prominent Aboriginal artist from the western MacDonnell Ranges.  Aged 57.

2017 in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A. – Glen Campbell, country, pop singer, guitarist and occasional actor best known for a series of hits in the 1960s and 1970s, including Gentle On My Mind, By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Wichita Lineman, Southern Nights and Rhinestone Cowboy.  Aged 81.

2022 in the Santa Ynez Valley, California, U.S.A. – Olivia Newton-John, Australian singer, actress and four-time Grammy-Award winner.  Having sold over 100 million records, Olivia Newton-John was one of the best-selling artists in the second half of the 20th century.  Aged 73

► And in 1962, a report from Shannon, Ireland , that 70 year old Mrs Marion Hart landed a tiny single engined plane at the local airport at 6.30 a.m.
Jaws must have dropped when she advised astonished officials that she had just flown the Atlantic.  Accompanied by a friend, Mrs Louise Sacchi (49) the flight had started from St Pierre, an island off the Newfoundland coast, and was made at altitudes between 7,000 and 9,000 feet.

He came to prominence in the early 1950s and sold over 50 million records worldwide.  Died 2023.

And born this day in 1945 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, Stuart Golland, the actor who appeared in many English television series, but is formerly known for his role as the publican  George Ward in the TV drama series Heartbeat.  Died 2003.

And died this day in 2017 in Northwood, London, England, Robert Hardy, the actor who had a long career in theatre, film and television.   He is best remembered for his television role as the irascible senior veterinarian Siegfried Farnon in the original, long-running series All Creatures Great And Small.   He was aged 91.

In events on this day, in 1964  2,000 residents in Harvey, West Australia, were evacuated into emergency accommodation at the town’s golf club and high school when flood waters threatened to breach a nearby dam.

And in 1973  Brisbane, Queensland, 15 died in Australia’s worst arson case, when the Whiskey Au Go Go nightclub was bombed.

In 1986, the long-running express trains between Melbourne and Sydney, the Southern Aurora and the Spirit of Progress, were amalgamated and renamed the Melbourne-Sydney Express.

Today’s photo, taken by Yours Truly, is of the heritage-listed Flinty Creek viaduct near Perth, in the north of the State. Dating to the 1870s, the earliest days of mechanised railways in Tasmania, this is now difficult for the passer-by to see, because of several trees which have grown since this pic was taken about 20 years ago.

This viaduct was bypassed by the railway in the early 1980s and is no longer in use. The Western line now passes by on an embankment, part of which can be see through the arches of this viaduct.
