FRIDAY MORNING RADIO, Edition 490, 9.00 ~ Midday AEST  10 October 2025

Easy listening, retro and recent releases not to be heard on mainstream radio stations throughout the morning, on the Derwent Valley’s own radio station.

LOOKING at events on 10 October, in 1957, Brisbane recorded its then hottest day for 64 years, with a maximum of 43.4 C.

On the same day, in Hobart, hundreds of people received a scare when a large object appeared in the sky at 7.42 p.m., which was the time the first Soviet Sputnik was due to appear.  Many believed it was the Sputnik, on course to crash near the Shot Tower in Taroona, and scores of hysterical people telephoned radio and The Mercury newspaper office.
The object was a hydrogen-filled balloon, launched by hoaxers from the University of Tasmania.  It exploded harmlessly, as the real Sputnik appeared over the horizon on its journey across the sky.

And again on the same day, in Windscale, Cumberland (Now Sellafield, Cumbria), England, a fire in a nuclear power station released a substantial quantity of radioactive contamination into the surrounding area. This remains the worst nuclear accident in Great Britain and is amongst the world’s worst .

Moving forward, to 1960,  in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Australian detectives, who had flown to the city, arrested 34 year old Stephen Bradley, removed him from the ocean liner Himalaya, and charged him with the kidnapping and murder of 8 year old schoolboy Graeme Thorne in Sydney.
Bradley had been on his way to England with his wife and own three children.

In 1964, in Tokyo, Japan, the opening ceremony of the 1964 Olympic Games was the first live Olympic telecast relayed internationally by geostationary communication satellite.

In 1968, Sydney, 23 passengers aboard a TAA Vickers Viscount turbo-prop airliner held on their seats, as the pilot flew dive aerobatics in an effort to free a jammed nosewheel.
The pilot’s attempts proved unsuccessful, so the plane was safely landed with it’s nose skidding along the runway.

Mt Geryon, in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.
A fatality over the weekend has brought attention to the fact that there are many people who go walking in the area, without the necessary equipment.
Even in summer, weather conditions can change from blue skies to a blizzard, extremely quickly. Unprepared people will face hypothermia and death.
Both Tasmania Police, and the Tasmanian National Parks and Wildlife Service, can provide advice on what equipment is needed to survive such conditions. Both departments have staff who, every year, put their own lives on the line by walking out in adverse conditions, to rescue walkers who find themselves in trouble.

Valley Sunrise Edition 852
0600 ~ 0900 AEST

During this edition, two chart-busters each hour, from the Top 40 charts of this week in 1971 and a mix of recent tracks from indie artists and other easy-listening music which you won’t hear on mainstream radio.

► Today’s photo – On the evening of 20 September, 1893,   Drama on the Tasmanian main line railway, when an attempt was made to derail the Launceston – Hobart express train on the Horseshoe Bridge, near Brighton.

The culprit had, apparently, intended to send the entire train over the edge of the bridge, into a deep gully; an act which, if successful, would have caused major loss of lives.

The fireman slipped from the locomotive cab, but saved himself at the last moment, by grabbing an outside handrail.

All three crew (driver, fireman and guard) were later commended for safely assisting all passengers off the bridge in the darkness. Being a railway-only bridge, there was no decking, just a void between each sleeper. Very few passengers were injured; those who were, sustained minor cuts.

The next day, a large team of gangers had the unenviable job of retrieving the train. One of their number was fatally injured when two trolleys collided in nearby Bridgewater, the next day.

A local resident, Charles Briggs, was arrested on, what would today be regarded as circumstantial evidence, imprisoned and sent for trial.
The jury couldn’t arrive at a unanimous verdict, so Briggs was returned to prison to face a second trial the following year.

The second jury was also undecided. This was fortunate for Briggs, because if either jury had made a “guilty” verdict, he would’ve certainly had an appointment with an executioner.

As it was, he then walked free.

So, the mystery remains, to this day. Guilty, or not guilty? If he wasn’t guilty – who was? And, why?

++++++++

BORN on this day in 1931, in Fort Worth, Texas, U.S.A. – Larry Martin Hagman, film and television actor, producer and director famous for his roles as oil tycoon J.R. Ewing in the 80s television soap opera Dallas.  Died 2012.

► DIED on this day in 1936 in Maghull, Liverpool, England – Frank Hornby, English businessman, politician, and inventor of Meccano and Hornby model trains.   Aged 73.

► DIED on this day in 1974 in Oxnard, California, U.S.A. – Walter Brennan, actor who was frequently cast in roles of characters considerably older than he actually was, due to various personal characteristics, including his unusual vocal intonations. He also released several records during the early 1960s, including Old Rivers, The Epic Ride of John H Glenn, and Don’t Go Near The Indians.  Aged 80.

Valley Sunrise Edition 850
0600 ~ 0900 AEST

During this edition, two chart-busters each hour, from the Top 40 charts of this week in 1978 and a mix of recent tracks from indie artists and other easy-listening music which you won’t hear on mainstream radio.

► LOOKING at some notable events on 7 September, in 1936 the last known surviving member of the thylacine species (or “Tasmanian Tiger” after which the radio station I broadcast on is named) died Hobart’s Beaumaris Zoo.
Although there have been claimed sightings since, there have been no reliable photographs taken and the species is believed extinct.

► In 1940, the Blitz of World War 2 started when Nazi Germany began to rain bombs on and around London. This was the first of 57 consecutive nights of bombing.

► And in 1978, Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov was assassinated in London while walking across Waterloo Bridge, by a Bulgarian secret police agent, who used a ricin pellet fired from a specially-designed umbrella gun.

► BORN on this day in 1920, in Jersey City, New Jersey U.S.A., Alexander Emil Caiola  alias Al Caiola, the jazz, country, rock, western and pop music guitarist who has recorded over fifty albums and worked with some of the biggest stars of the 20th Century.  These included Frank Sinatra, Percy Faith, Buddy Holly, Mitch Miller and Tony Bennett.  Died 2016.

► BORN on this day in 1936 in Lubbock, Texas, U.S.A., Charles Hardin Holley alias Buddy Holly, singer-songwiter and pioneer of rock and roll, whose success lasted only a year and a half before his death in a 1959 plane crash.
