30 November 2025

LOOKING at events on 30 November;

1936, in Sydenham Hill, London, England – The Crystal Palace was destroyed by fire.  The Crystal Palace was a cast-iron and glass building originally erected in Hyde Park to house the Great Exhibition of 1851, during which exhibitors from around the world gathered to display samples of the latest technology developed during the Industrial Revolution.
After the exhibition, the building was moved to a new park in affluent Sydenham Hill, where it continued to be used for exhibition purposes.  The cause of the fire was never determined.

On this day in 1954, in Sylacauga, Alabama U.S.A., a 4 kg meteorite crashed through a house roof and struck Mrs Hewlett Hedges while she was having a nap.
 This was the first documented case of an object from outer space hitting a person on Earth. The meteorite was taken by the United States Air Force, as part of it’s declared responsibility for “everything that falls from the skies,”  but was returned to her a couple of weeks later.

28 November 2025

► LOOKING at events on 28 November;

In Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) in 1807, the first deportees from Norfolk Island, in the Pacific Ocean 1,400 kilometres east of Australia, founded the town initally known as “The Hills” in the Derwent Valley.  It was later renamed New Norfolk.

Fast Forward to 1895, and the first car race in the USA took place during a massive snowstorm, over an 86 km course between Chicago’s Jackson Park, and Evanston, Illinois.  The winner was James Frank Duryea, who drove a self-made vehicle.
The gruelling conditions caused cars to become bogged in snowdrifts, slide into each other, and constantly stall.  Two other drivers became unconscious with hypothermia.
Duryea was first to complete the course, after more than 10 hours, at an average speed of 8 kmh.

In Gundagai, New South Wales, in 1932,  the Dog On The Tuckerbox statue was unveiled near the town as a tribute to pioneer farmers of the district.  It replaced another Dog On The Tuckerbox statue which had been placed at a site nine miles from Gundagai in 1926.

In the Blue Mountains, New South Wales in 1968, three men died and at least 120 homes were lost as bush fires with 30 metre flames, fanned by 80 km/h winds, raged through the small townships of Warrimoo, Blaxland, and Springwood.

In Antarctica, 1979, an Air New Zealand DC-10 airliner strayed off its intended course during a sightseeing flight and crashed into 4,200 metre high Mt Erebus.  All 257 passengers and crew were lost.

BORN…..
Gerard Bertelkamp alias Beeb Birtles, was born on this day in 1948 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He is an Australian musician, who has been a member of various pop bands, including Zoot, Mississippi and the Little River Band

Martin Clunes was born on this day in 1961 in Wimbleton, England.  He is an actor and comedian, best known for his roles as Gary Strang in Men Behaving Badly and as Doctor Martin Ellingham in Doc Martin.

► DIED…..
Enid Blyton died this day in 1968 aged 71 in Hampstead, London, England..  She was one of the most successful children’s storytellers of the twentieth century, noted for numerous series of books based on recurring characters and designed for different age groups.
Her books were highly successful in many parts of the world, having sold over 600 million copies.

Tony Meehan, died this day in 2005 aged 62 in Paddington London, England.  He was founding member of the pop group the Shadows, with Jet Harris, Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch, and played drums in early Cliff Richard and The Shadows hits and in early Shadows instrumentals.
