It was built to 2ft gauge after the turn of the 20th century to transport coal from the Kaoota mine to a wharf at Margate.  After the mine closed, it was used to transport fruit, timber and passengers.

The tramway was closed and dismantled in 1922. About 6 km of the upper section is now a walking track.
