1938 in New York, U.S.A. – The Orson Welles broadcast of a radio play based on H G Wells’ novel The War Of The Worlds, which depicted a Martian invasion of Earth, took place.
It was presented as a series of simulated news bulletins and was so realistic it caused widespread panic and anxiety, despite repeated announcements indicting the programme was fictitious.
In 1958, Brisbane experienced its hottest October day then on record with a maximum temperature of 40.55 C, whilst Sydney experienced its hottest October day for ten years with a maximum of 35.7 C
Also on this day in 1958, in Spring Hill, Nova Scotia, Canada – Twelve miners, who had been trapped by a rock fall 4 kilometres underground for six days, were brought safely to the surface.
In 1959 Sydney, New South Wales had the heaviest deluge in the city’s history, and a small tornado, which caused massive flooding and property damage
In 1965, in Melbourne, Victoria – English model Jean Shrimpton introduced the mini-skirt to Australia, amongst much controversy, when she attended the local Derby Day wearing a dress 6½ inches (16 centimetres) above the knee.
In 1970, throughout Vietnam, the heaviest monsoon in six years caused flooding which claimed 293 lives, left 200,000 homeless and virtually halted the Vietnam War.
