On this day in 1911 First use of an aircraft in war was made when an Italian pilot took off from Libya to observe Turkish army lines during the Turco-Italian War.
1929, New York, U.S.A. – The Great Depression started after a steady decline in stock market prices after a peak the previous month, and the New York Stock Exchange showed signs of panic.
1930, Sydney, New South Wales – A workman fell 55 metres (180 feet) from the Harbour Bridge, then under construction – and survived..
1942, Palm Springs, California, U.S.A. – All 12 passengers and crewmen aboard an airliner died when a U.S. Army Air Forces bomber collided with it near Amongst the victims was award-winning composer and songwriter Ralph Rainger, composer of Thanks For The Memory, Love In Bloom and,Blue Hawaii..
1958, Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada – An earthquake trapped 174 miners in North America’s deepest coal mine at the time. By November 1, rescuers from around the world had rescued 100 men. The remaining 74 lost their lives.
1980, Sydney, New South Wales – A new multi-cultural television station, SBS, was officially opened in Sydney and Melbourne by Australia’s then-Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser.
Today’s photo: Regular viewers of the ITV television series, “Foyle’s War” will be familiar with the pre-war Wolseley police car.
A similar car is on display at the Tasmanian Transport Museum. A big difference is, that in the 1940s, it was converted for all-rail operation by a large mining company. (Yours Truly)
