On this day in 1911 
The Royal Australian Navy was officially established.

1954  Hobart, Tasmania – The first section of the Brooker Highway, from Risdon Rd to Derwent Park Rd,  was officially opened by Governor Sir Ronald Cross.  

1958,  Cape Canaveral, U.S.A. – NASA launched the lunar probe Pioneer 1, which failed to leave Earth and was destroyed when it re-entered the atmosphere.

1982,  Near Portsmouth, England – The surviving one-third of the Mary Rose, a Tudor gunship which sank in 1545, was raised from the sea bed in the Solent Channel.  It, and thousands of artifacts also recovered are effectively a time capsule of the era.

1984,  Astronaut Kathryn Sullivan became the first American woman to perform a space walk during a mission by the Space Shuttle Challenger.

► Well known people born on this date, were;

1)  John Nettles, in 1943 in St Austell, Cornwall England.  He is an actor best known for his lead roles in the television dramas Bergerac and Midsomer Murders.  Turns 83.

2)  Dawn French, in 1957 in Anglesey, Wales.  She is a comedienne, actress and screenwriter well known for her lead role as Geraldine Granger in the TV sitcom The Vicar of Dibley.  Turns 69. 

► Well known people who died this date, were;

3)  Arthur Hoey Davis alias Steele Rudd, in 1935 in Brisbane, Queensland, aged 66.  He was an Australian author famed for writing Austrralian publications such as On Our Selection, which was serialised and broadcast by radio stations throughout Australia.

4)  Édith Giovanna Gassion alias Edith Piaf, in 1963 in Plascassier, France aged 47.  She was an actress and cultural icon universally regarded as France’s greatest popular singer.

5)  Ronald Hulme alias Russ Hamilton, in 2008 in Buckley, North Wales, aged 76.  He was the first Liverpool pop singer to hit the United States music scene with his song I’ll Buy You A Rainbow..  Turns 83.
