On this day in 1963 in Northeastern Italy – A 260 million cubic metre landslide fell from a mountain side into a reservoir behind the Vajont Dam, which, at 262 metres was one of the highest in the world.
Most of the water behind the dam wall was displaced, and formed a 200 metre high mega-tsunami which crashed over the top and devastated many villages in the Piave Valley, causing the loss of 2,000 lives.
1973, The $50 note was introduced in Australia.
1974, Bankcard the country’s first mass-marketed credit card, was introduced to Australia.
1992, Peekskill, New York, U.S.A., A fragment of a meteorite landed in the driveway of the Knapp residence, and destroyed the family’s 1980 Chevrolet Malibu car.
1999, The last flight took place of the American Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird” high speed reconnaissance aircraft. The SR-71 was capable of operating at very high speeds and altitudes, enabling it to outrun any threats. Whilst 12 of the 32 SR-71 aircraft built were lost in various crashes, none were ever lost through enemy action.
► Well known people born this day, were;
1) John O’Grady, alias Nino Culotta, in 1907 in Sydney, New South Wales, author of the novel They’re A Weird Mob, a comic novel which had an initial print run of 6,000 copies, but in less than six months had been reprinted eight times. By the time of O’Grady’s death in 1981 sales had reached a million.
2) John Lennon, in 1940 in Liverpool, England , musician, songwriter and member of the Beatles. Assassinated 1980.
3) Joe McFadden, in 1975 in Glasgow, Scotland, actor who has appeared in the TV series Taggart, but is particularly familiar as PC Joe Mason in the television drama series Heartbeat. Turns 51.
