EVENTS ON THIS DATE, 4 OCTOBER;


On this day in 1918  Sayreville, New Jersey, U.S.A.
– Over 100 lives were lost when a series of fires and explosions destroyed an ammunition plant over three days.  It forced massive evacuations and spread ordnance over a wide area, pieces of which can still be found.

1952  Britain’s first nuclear bomb was exploded on the Monte Bello Islands, off the West Australian coast.  

1957,  Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth, was launched by the Soviet Union.

1967,  Hobart, Tasmania – The Hydro-Electric Commission purchased a former vehicular ferry from New Zealand, Hinemoa, for use as a temporary floating power station to alleviate a power shortage caused by a drought in the central highlands. 

1990,  Germany was re-unified when the German Democratic Republic ceased to exist and its territory became part of the Federal Republic of Germany.
