► EVENTS on 2 OCTOBER;

On this day in 1955 in Hobart, Tasmania – A Tiger Moth aircraft crashed near the summit of Mt Wellington.  The pilot & passenger were unhurt.

1962, Sydney, New South Wales –Two Royal Australian Navy pilots manoeuvred their badly damaged Sea Venom jet fighter planes away from inhabited areas after a collision over the city.
One pilot ejected from his plane seconds before it crashed into Sydney Harbour, the other managed to fly back to Nowra Air Base and land safely.

1964, Sydney, New South Wales – The Gladesville Bridge, which is the world’s longest concrete arch at the time, opened.  It was the largest bridge built in New South Wales since the Sydney Harbour Bridge was completed in 1932.

1970, Mordialloc, Victoria – 300 boys at the local high school refused to return to classes after 50 fellow students were ordered home because their hair was too long.

Beryl Hunt, alias Lorrae Desmond, in 1932 in Mittagong, New South Wales, singer and actress, best known for her role as Shirley Gilroy in the long running television series A Country Practice between 1981 and 1992.  Died 2021.

Edward Ray Cochran, alias Eddie Cochran, in 1938 in Albert Lea, Minnesota U.S.A., rockabilly singer of the late 1950s and early 1960s.  He died in a road accident in 1960 at the age of 21, after performing at the Hippodrome theatre in Bristol. England.

Henri Szeps, in 1943 in Lausanne, Switzerland, actor most recently known for his portrayal of Robert Beare in the ABC television sitcom Mother And Son  Died 2025.

Well known people died this day, were;

Roy Harold Scherer, Jr. alias Rock Hudson, in 1985 at the age of 59 in Beverley Hills, California U.S.A..  He was an actor who completed nearly 70 motion pictures during a career of more than 40 years.  Hudson became one of the first major Hollywood celebrities to die from an AIDs-related illness.

Orvon Eugene Autry alias Gene Autry, in 1998 at the age of 91 in Studio City, California, U.S.A.  He was a singer, famous as The Singing Cowboy on radio, in movies and on television for over three decades from the 1930s.

Tom Petty, in 2017 at the age of 66 in Santa Monica, California, U.S.A..  He was a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist; and a founding member of the 1980s group Travelling Wilburys.
