► EVENTS on 25 SEPTEMBER;

On this day in 1954 in Queenstown, Tasmania – ABC radio station 7QN Queenstown commenced transmission on a frequency of 540 kHz.  In 1991 the callsign was dropped when the station moved to the FM band and became a relay of the ABC’s Launceston station 7NT.

1981 Sydney, New South Wales – The tallest building in the city, the Sydney Centrepoint tower, was completed.  The tower is over 300 metres high and took 3½ years to build.

1983 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland – 38 republican prisoners hijacked a prison lorry and smashed their way out of  the Maze Prison. This was the largest prison escape in British history.

Felicity Kendal, in 1946 in Warwickshire, England, actress famous for her roles as Barbara Good in the BBC sitcom The Good Life.  and Rosemary Boxer in the drama Rosemary And Thyme.  (Turns 80)

Colin Friels, in 1952 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland, Australian film and television actor who has appeared in numerous productions.  (Turns 74)
