On this day in 1939 in Hamburg, Germany– The Nazi propaganda broadcaster known as Lord Haw Haw, in reality English traitor William Joyce, began transmitting in an effort to demoralise Allied troops and civilians within reception range. Joyce was captured by English troops at the end of the war, sent for trial and ultimately hanged for treason on 3 January 1946.
1948 in Berlin, Germany – In defiance of a 3 month blockade by Soviet forces, it was announced an Allied air lift had flown in 7,000 tons of supplies into West Berlin. British and American aircraft had made 895 flights into the city in 24 hours using Dakota, Globemaster and York aircraft.
1977 The space probe Voyager 1 took the first photograph of the Earth and the Moon together in space.
2014 Scotland voted against independence from the United Kingdom.
