On this day in 1916 in Quebec, Canada – The central span of the Quebec Bridge which crosses the lower St Lawrence River west of Quebec City, collapsed for the second time, killing 11 men. The bridge had previously collapsed on August 29, 1907.
1960 in Melbourne – The Ford Motor Company Australia announced the first Ford Falcon model for the Australian market, as a challenger to the well established Holden. The basic XK series Falcon was priced at £1,137, £30 more than the equivalent Holden model.
1966 Forth, Tasmania – Tragedy struck when four young Army Reservists were swept off a weir across the Forth River, whilst on an Army exercise.
1975 Birmingham, England – The last Wolseley car left the assembly line. The company was founded in 1901 and became the largest car manufacturer in England in the 1920s. By the Second World War, Wolseley had merged with Morris Motors. Although Wolseley cars are no longer produced, the name is now owned by the Chinese SAIC Motor company
2001 New York, U.S.A. – The September 11 terrorist attacks took place with plane hijackings resulting in the collapse of both World Trade Centre towers, and destruction of the western portion of The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Another hijacked airliner crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to regain control.
