On this day in 1940 in London, England – W W 2 – The Battle of Britain began, with Hitler threatening to raze London in reprisal for RAF bombings of Germany..
1949 in Filton, England – A giant new airliner, the Bristol Brabazon, flew for the first time. The propeller-driven aircraft had eight Rolls Royce Centaurus engines and was designed for non-stop flights between London and New York.
It was designed to carry 100 passengers, each passenger having space similar to that of the entire interior of a small car. Little interest was shown by airlines and the only prototype was broken up in 1953..
1957 Dearborn, Michigan, U.S.A. – The Ford Motor Company introduced the Edsel model, which was sold through a separate division of the company. The Edsel sold poorly and is now known as one of the worst marketing failures in automotive history. Nevertheless, today an Edsel is considered a collectors’ item in the U.S. and, in good condition can be valued at over $100,000 American dollars.
