On this day in 1955, Hobart – Plans for the construction of a drive-in movie theatre in the middle of the Elwick racecourse were announced.
1955, Sydney, New South Wales – A drama in the sky began when a pilot casually swung the propeller of an Auster light plane as he walked past, at Bankstown aerodrome. The engine fired, and the plane took off, pilotless.
It climbed to an altitude of 1,000 feet and flew aimlessly for 3 hours over the city. It was eventually shot down by two RAAF fighter planes when it headed towards the sea off Broken Bay.
1961, Chamonix, France – 63 tourists were rescued from a stranded cable car after a low-flying jet aircraft sliced through the supporting cable. Another cable car plunged to the ground, with the loss of six lives.
1984, Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S.A. – The Space Shuttle Discovery was launched on its maiden voyage.
