On this day in 1923 in the Australian Capital Territory – The first sod for construction of the Australian National Capital was turned by the Federal Minister for Works and Railways, Stewart Smith.
1963 in Washington, D.C., U.S.A. – Martin Luther King Jr delivered his historic I Have A Dream speech to an audience of over 250,000 during the March on Washington for Jobs And Freedom, and to appeal for an end to racial segregation and discrimination.
1967 The popular ABC soap opera Bellbird began its ten-year run. Bellbird, which related the lives of residents in a fictitious country town of that name, became the longest running soapie ever produced by the ABC.
It starred many actors who were familiar at the time, such as Peter Aanensen, Elspeth Ballantyne, Carl Bleazby, Lynette Curran, Keith Eden, Maurie Fields, Sheila Florance, Penne Hackforth-Jones, George Mallaby, Terry McDermott, Rod Mullinar, Anne Phelan, Sean Scully and Ian Smith, who is more recently known as Harold Bishop in Neighbours.
