23 August 2026

EVENTS ON THIS DATE, 23 AUGUST;

On this day in 1954, Burbank, California, U.S.A. – The prototype of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport aircraft made it’s first flight.  This aircraft is used in over 60 countries including Australia and New Zealand for numerous purposes, including disaster relief, search and rescue and military transport.  The Hercules is one of few aircraft to mark 50 years of service with it’s original owner, and for over 70 years, it is the world’s longest continuously built military aircraft.

1966,  The spacecraft Lunar Orbiter 1 took the first photograph of Earth from orbit around the Moon.  The craft was deliberately crash-landed on the far side of the Moon in October 1966, on its 577th orbit.

1990,  Berlin, Germany – The separate States of West Germany and East Germany announced that they would unite on October 3.

Today’s graphic: Received with thanks, from long-time listener, Karin, over in Perth, West Australia.

Today’s Playlist :

Introducing a new feature, Musical Partners. Through the 1960s and into the 70s, a responding or sequel track was occasionally released in answer to a hit 45 rpm record.

I will try to include both tracks here, over coming weeks.
