On this day in 1880 in Cologne, Germany – Construction of Cologne Cathedral, the city’s most famous landmark, which had begun in 1248, was completed.
The cathedral, which is 144 metres long with twin spires 157 metres tall, was hit by 14 bombs dropped from Allied aircraft during World War 2, yet it survived unscathed, even though the rest of the city was destroyed.
Today, the cathedral is the most visited attraction in Germany, attracting around 20,000 people daily and it is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Register.

Hector Crawford, born 1913 in Melbourne, Victoria. He was an Australian television entrepreneur best known for his radio and television production company He died in 1991.
Trevor Bannister, born 1934 in Durrington, Wiltshire, England. He was an actor best known for his role as DS Ted Roach in the long-running police drama The Bill. He died in 2011.
Tony Scannell, born 1945 in Kinsale, Ireland. He was an actor best known for his role as DS Ted Roach in the long-running police drama The Bill . He died in 2020.
Sarah Brightman, born 1960 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England. She is a soprano, actress, songwriter who made her musical theatre debut in Cats in 1981, when she met composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, whom she later married.
She has also starred in several Broadway musicals, including The Phantom Of The Opera. She turns 66 today.
