On this day in 1902, The coronation of King Edward VII took place in Westminster Abbey, London, England.
1911, London, England – The hottest day for 70 years was recorded with shade temperature of 97 F. (36 C).
1945, Nagasaki, Japan – 39,000 people died instantly when a U.S. B 29 aircraft dropped the atomic bomb Fat Man over the city.
1966, Hobart, Tasmania – Controversy erupted after the sudden enforcement of the 58-year-old Sunday Observance Act which required driving schools, entertainment establishments, laundromats, theatres, and other commercial businesses to cease operating on Sundays.
1969, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. – Members of a religious cult led by Charles Manson brutally murdered pregnant actress Sharon Tate, coffee heiress Abigail Folger, Polish actor Woiciech Frykowski, men’s hairstylist Jay Sebring, and high-school graduate Steven Parent.
Manson’s initial death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. A parole application in 2012 was denied and it was decided he would not be reconsidered for another 15 years. He died in 2017.
1974, Washington DC, U.S.A. – As a direct result of the Watergate scandal, Richard Nixon became the first U.S. President to resign from office. His Vice-President, Gerald Ford, assumed office.
