On this day in 1857, Hobart and Launceston were linked by electric telegraph.
1872, The Overland Telegraph Line between Port Augusta and Darwin was completed.
1943, Off the Solomon Islands – American Patrol Boat PT 109 sank after being rammed by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri. The Commander of PT 109, Lt. John F Kennedy, a future U.S. President, was credited with saving all but two of his crew.
1962, Hobart – A 27 year old Yugoslav migrant, Anton Masnec, was sentenced to death after being found guilty of the torture and murder of 78 year old Helma Huxley, better known as “Taffy The Bee Man” near Longley, in the Huon Valley. The sentence was commuted.
1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, leading to conflict with coalition forces in the Gulf War.

1922, Alexander Graham Bell, in Nova Scotia, Canada, aged 75. He was a scientist and inventor, credited with having invented the first practical telephone.
1936, Louis Bleriot, in Paris, France, aged 64. He was a French aviation pioneer, inventor and engineer who, in 1909, made the first flight across the English Channel in a heavier-than-air craft..
