On this day in 1941,
in Washington D.C., U.S.A.  – U.S. President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered the seizure of all Japanese assets in the United States, in response to the Japanese occupation of French Indo-China.

1950, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory – The Federal Government announced that Australia would send troops to fight in the Korean War. The first Australian forces arrived in Korea on September 17

1966, Lenah Valley, Tasmania – A small dog was rescued from an abandoned, 10 metre mine shaft by an officer from the New Town police station.  The mineshaft, which was located behind the local electricity sub-station, was later filled in.

1895,  Jane Bunford,
in Northfield, Birmingham, England.   A childhood accident, which damaged her pituitary gland, caused it to release excessive growth hormone. When she died in 1922 at the age of 26, she was the tallest-ever person in the United Kingdom, at 2.1 metres, or 7 ft 11 in.  For the next 60 years she also held the record for being the tallest woman in medical history.
Her funeral and burial were held just after her death, but it was discovered 50 years later, that her skeleton was on display at a Birmingham university.  It is not known whether her body had been sold or stolen in 1922, but the university was required to release her remains in 2005, for burial in an unmarked grave.

1952,  Eva Peron,
in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the age of 33.  The second wife of Argentine President Juan Peron and First Lady of Argentina from 1946, she had been active within the trade union movement.
She founded the charitable Eva Peron Foundation, championed womens’ suffrage, and founded and ran the nation’s first large female political party, the Peronist Party.  She remains part of her country’s culture, particularly as the subject of the musical Evita..

2023,  Sinead O’Connor, in Glenageary, County Dublin, Ireland, aged 56.  She was a singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the late 1980s with her debut album The Lion and The Cobra and achieved worldwide success in 1990 with a cover of the song Nothing Compares To You.
