On this day in 1918 in the Atlantic Ocean 190 kilometres off Ireland, RMS Carpathia, the ship which rescued 706 survivors of the RMS Titanic sinking six years previously, was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine, with the loss of 2 crew.
1940, Brisbane, Queensland – The Storey Bridge, then the second-longest single span in Australia, opened.
1959, Hobart, Tasmania – The Minister for Agriculture announced the discovery of the first European wasps in Tasmania.
1975, An American Apollo and a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft, docked with each other whilst in Earth orbit, marking the first such link-up between spacecraft from the two nations.
1981, Kansas City, Missouri, U.S.A. – A structural failure led to the collapse of two overhead walkways at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, resulting in the loss of 114 lives and injuries to over 200 people.
2014, Eastern Ukraine – Malaysia Airlines Flight MH 17, a Boeing 777 airliner was shot down by separatist rebels whilst travelling between Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur, with the loss of all 298 aboard.

2009, Gordon Waller, in Norwich, Connecticut, USA, aged 64. He was a a singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known as Gordon of the 60s duo Peter & Gordon, who had several hits during the Merseybeat era, including A World Without Love.
