On this day in 1964, in Launceston, Tasmania – A flood which inundated the suburb of Inveresk, caused the biggest emergency evacuation since the 1929 disaster.
1966, Sydney, New South Wales – The Sydney Water Board banned the mini-skirt, with the Board’s Secretary giving female employees 48 hours to drop their dress-lengths.
1979, The derelict 77-tonne American space station Skylab re-entered the atmosphere and was believed to have broken into more than 500 pieces which fell to Earth along a 6,400 kilometre long flight path. The final pieces were believed to have landed near the West Australian town of Esperance.

1895, Oscar Hammerstein II, in New York, U.S.A. He was co-writer and lyricist of over 850 songs in collaboration with composers Jerome Kern, Vincent Youmans, Sigmund Romberg and most notably, Richard Rodgers. The final song he wrote was Edelweiss, for the musical The Sound of Music. He died in 1960.

1982, Kenneth More, in London, England, at the age of 67. He was an actor and star of numerous movies, including Reach For The Sky in which he portrayed the legless fighter ace Douglas Bader, in 1956; Sink The Bismarck (1960); and the television series The Forsyte Saga in 1967..
1998, James Corbitt Morris, alias Jimmie Driftwood, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, U.S.A., aged 91. He was an American folk songwriter and musician, who wrote over 6,000 songs, including the Johnny Horton hit, The Battle of New Orleans.
2004, George Mallaby died on this day in 2004 on the Gold Coast, Queensland, aged 64.. He was an Australian actor best known for his role as Detective Peter Barnes in the Crawford Productions series Homicide. (Age 64).
