On this day in 1901 Sydney, New South Wales – Australia’s largest department store, Anthony Horders and Sons, was destroyed in a massive early morning blaze. Whilst 400 staff members escaped, one, who was tragically trapped on the roof, jumped 45 metres to his death.
1960, Vanuatu – All 268 residents of the island of Le Lopevi were evacuated, after a previously dormant volcano began to erupt. This volcano has remained intermittently active since and the island is now deserted.
1962, Melbourne, Victoria, and the new King Street Bridge spanning the Yarra River was closed, when serious cracks appeared in some sections.
1962, The world’s first commercial communications satellite, Telstar 1, was launched into orbit from Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S.A..
1963, Hobart, A 16 year old youth, Ray Worbey, who was operating a trench digger for an extension to the Tasmanian Museum, survived unhurt when he severed an 11,000 volt underground cable. The resulting power outage stopped trolley buses instantly, and blacked out much of the city centre.

1979, Arthur Fiedler, in Brookline, Massachusetts, U.S.A. aged 84. He was conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, which specialised in light classical and popular music.
1989, Mel Blanc, in Los Angeles, USA, aged 81. He was a voice actor and comedian who voiced characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Sylvester the Cat, Tweety Bird, Foghorn Leghorn, Woody Woodpecker, Barney Rubble and many more.
2015, Michael Demitri Shalhoub alias Omar Sharif in Cairo, Egypt aged 83 He was an Arab-Egyptian actor famous for his roles in the movies Doctor Zhivago, Funny Girl and Lawrence of Arabia.
