On this day in 1956, U.S.A. – Elvis Presley introduced his new single, Hound Dog, on television, shocking the audience with what were considered to be suggestive hip movements.
1963, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, The Federal Treasurer (Mr Holt) announced the name of the basic unit of Australia’s new decimal currency – the Royal. The then Leader of the Federal Opposition immediately pledged to change that name when Labour achieved office.
1963, London, England, The British Secretary of State for War, John Profumo resigned because of a sex scandal known as the Profumo Affair.
1968, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. Presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy was assassinated by Sirhan Sirhan, a 24 year old Palestinian.
1976, Idaho, U.S.A. The 93 metre Teton Dam, which had been completed the previous November, collapsed, and released an estimated 57,000 cubic metres of water, which devastated 777 square kilometres. Two towns were destroyed, causing the deaths of 11 people.
The dam, which had been constructed on unsuitable, porous rock in a known earthquake area, was never rebuilt.

1870, Jeannie Gunn, alias Mrs Aeneas Gunn in Melbourne, Victoria. She was a novelist, author of the 1908 novel We of The Never Never, which told of her time living in the Northern Territory.
The book sold over 300,000 copies over 30 years, was translated into German, and by 1990 had sold over a million. She died in 1961.
1928, Robert Howell Brown alias Robert Lansing, in San Diego, California, U.S.A. He was an actor who appeared in numerous stage, film and television series.. He died in 1994.

1993, Harold Lloyd Jenkins alias Conway Twitty in Springfield, Missouri, U.S.A.. aged 59. He was a country singer who also had success in early rock and roll, rhythm and blues and pop music.
1999, Melvin Howard Tormé, alias Mel Torme inLos Angeles, California, U.S.A. aged 73 He was a musician, jazz composer and arranger, drummer, actor in radio, film, and television, and the author of five books.
2002, Gwen Plumb inSydney, New South Wales. aged 89. She was a stage, radio and television actress, whose first well known role was in the ABC radio serial Blue Hills. She also appeared in The Young Doctors, Neighbours, and Home And Away.
2023, Astrud Weinert alias Astrid Gilberto, in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. aged 83. She was a Brazilian singer, famous for her samba and bossa nova music, including the Grammy Award-winning song The Girl From Ipanema.
