LOOKING at events on 14 November;

In human endeavour in 1889, pioneering female journalist Elizabeth Jane Cochrane, alias Nellie Bly, began a successful attempt to travel around the world in less than 80 days.  She completed the journey in seventy-two days.

On the air in 1922, London, England, the British Broadcasting Company, which was then part of the General Post Office, began a monopoly radio service.  It was succeeded by the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1927.

In the air in 1940, during World War 2, the English city of  Coventry was heavily bombed in a raid by Luftwaffe aircraft.  A thousand lives were lost, and the city’s 14th Century Cathedral was destroyed.  Today, the stone outer walls, tower and spire remain as an attraction.

On the roads in 1951,  in Melbourne, Victoria, the Ford Motor Company released it’s first medium sized car, the Consul, for sale in Australia..  .

In the sea in 1963, an undersea volcanic eruption near Iceland created a new island, later named Surtsey, which achieved a maximum size of 2.7 m2 and a height of 155 metres.  Although wave and weather erosion has caused it to diminish in size, it is not expected to disappear below sea level before the year 2100.

Arthur Hoey Davis alias Steele Rudd, was born this day in 1868 in Drayton, Queensland.  He was an author famed for writing Australian publications such as On Our Selection, which was serialised and broadcast by radio stations throughout Australia.  He died in 1935.

Edward Higgins White, was born this day in 1930 in San Antonio, Texas, U.S.A.  He was an astronaut, and the first American to conduct a spacewalk.  He was one of three astronauts who died in the disastrous fire which destroyed the Apollo 1 Command Module, on the launch pad, in January 1967.

Cornell Gunter, was born this day in 1936 in Coffeyville, Kansas, U.S.A.  He was a rhythm and blues singer, most active in the 1950s and 1960s with the group The Coasters, and was an original member of The Platters.   He died in 1990.

Freddie Garrity, was also born this day in 1936, in Manchester England.  He was a singer, front man and comic element in the 1960s group Freddie And The Dreamers. He died in 2006.

Charles Philip Arthur George, alias King Charles III, was born this day in 1948 in Buckingham Palace, London.

► DIED…..

Warren Mitchell, died this day in 2015 in Highgate, England.  He was actor famous for his role of cockney Alf Garnett in the BBC television series Till Death Us Do Part (1965-1975)   He was aged 89.

Des O’Connor, died this day in 2020 in Buckinghamshire.  He was an English broadcaster and singer, who recorded thirty six albums, and had four top ten singles  He was aged 88.
