1872 – The largest urban fire in U.S. history started at 7:20 p.m. in the basement of a warehouse in Boston, Massachusetts. The fire consumed 776 buildings, including much of the financial district. At least 30 lives were lost and damage valued at $73.5 million was caused before the fire was contained twelve hours later.
1913 – From November 7 till November 10, the Great Lakes Storm, a blizzard with hurricane-force winds, devastated the Great Lakes Basin in the United States and the Canadian province of Ontario. It destroyed 19 ships, caused over 250 deaths, and was the most destructive natural disaster ever to hit the region.
1942 – U S serviceman Edward Leonski was executed in Pentridge prison in Melbourne, Victoria, after being convicted of the murders of three Australian women.
1965 – A major power blackout, lasting nearly 10 hours, crippled the north-east of the U.S.A. and adjacent parts of Canada, stranding millions at the start of the 5.30 p.m. rush hour. Thousands were trapped in underground trains, and had to be led out through darkened tunnels.
1966 – Art treasures valued at 120 million dollars were damaged and destroyed when the Arno River in Florence, Italy flooded during Italy’s worst storms for 1,000 years.

1936 – Louisville, Kentucky, U.S.A. – Mary Travers, singer-songwriter and one of the folk music group Peter Paul & Mary, one of the most successful of the 1960s. She died in 2009.
1941 – Berkeley, California, U.S.A. – Thomas Richard Fogerty alias Tom Fogerty, musician best known as the guitarist in Creedence Clearwater Revival. He died in 1990.

2000 – Wallaroo, South Australia – Kevin Shegog, country singer and 1983 inductee to the Australian Country Music Hall Of Fame, aged 67.
2016 – Allendale, New Jersey U.S.A., Al Caiola, jazz, country, rock, western and pop music guitarist who recorded over 50 albums and worked with some of the biggest stars of the 20th Century, including Frank Sinatra, Percy Faith, Buddy Holly, Mitch Miller and Tony Bennett. He was aged 96.
