► LOOKING at events on 7 November;
In 1872, The brigantine Mary Celeste departed New York, eventually to be found sailing in fine weather, unmanned and abandoned. None of the people aboard were ever seen or heard from since, and the reason for the abandonment remains a mystery.
In the air in 1938, two Royal Air Force Vickers Wellesley aircraft arrived in Darwin, Northern Territory, after a record breaking non-stop flight from Egypt of 11,526 km.
In 1957, two schoolgirls, who were trapped in a crevice on The Nut, behind Stanley in Tasmania, were rescued. (For those unfamiliar, The Nut is an ancient volcanic plug, 152 metres high.)
In 1961, the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington, U.S.A., collapsed in a windstorm, just four months after it’s completion.
In 1963, Hobart, narrowly avoided losing its only trans-Derwent road link when the floating Hobart bridge was struck by a 30-ton pontoon which broke away from the adjacent Tasman Bridge construction work during a storm.
Had the floating pontoon bridge been holed, it would have sunk.
