► LOOKING at events on 2 November;
On 2 November 1922, Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services (which became QANTAS) began a regular air service between Clareville and Cloncurry.
The first passenger on the 930 km route was 85 tear old Alexander Kennedy who, 53 years earlier, had taken 8 months to make the same journey by bullock wagon.
1936 in London, the British Broadcasting Corporation inaugurated the BBC Television Service, the world’s first regular, “high-definition” (then defined as at least 200 lines) service. The channel still runs to this day as BBC 1, a callsign it acquired in 1964.
1942, and in World War 2 New Guinea, Australian troops recaptured Kokoda from Japanese forces.
1959 on Tasman Island, off Tasmania’s south east coast, a mother made a perilous trip down a precipitous 180 metre cliff with her son, who was suffering from acute appendicitis, to a waiting boat. This started the boy’s emergency journey to the Royal Hobart Hospital.
1974 in Seoul, South Korea, 78 lives were lost when the Time Go-Go Club was destroyed by fire. Six of the victims jumped to their deaths from the seventh floor, when a club official barred the doors after the fire started.
