► LOOKING at events on 24 October;
In 1946, A camera on board the V 2 rocket No. 13 took the first photograph of earth from outer space. The rocket, which was launched from White Sands, New Mexico, U.S.A., reached an altitude of 173 km.
In 1960, in Hobart, the city’s final electric tram ran between the city and Springfield, closing a service which had lasted 67 years
In 1968, in Glenorchy, Tasmania, a stuntman was fatally injured when he fell 15 metres from a motorcycle during a high-wire performance at the Royal Hobart Show. Two girls, who were also suspended from the motorcycle, were left trapped, but were later rescued.
In 1973, two survivors from a missing coastal freighter, Blythe Star, were found on a remote logging road near Tasmania’s East Coast. The vessel had disappeared without trace over a week before, and the crew of eight had drifted on a life raft for 12 days, unseen by search aircraft.
The raft eventually drifted ashore at uninhabited Deep Glen Bay, and the two men had climbed cliffs and waded through thick bush to summon help for five other survivors. (One of their number had previously died at sea.)
In 1976, Most of the south-east of the Australian continent was blacked out between 3.45 p.m. and 5.45 p.m. by a total eclipse of the sun. Thousands of spectators at the Bombala racecourse in southern New South Wales popped champagne corks as the sun was blocked out by the Moon.
