On 12 October, 1912,   Queenstown, Tasmania – Forty-two copper miners died when fire broke out in the Mt Lyell copper mine.  Another 74 who were below ground escaped, and 54 more were rescued after vital equipment was rushed from Melbourne to Burnie via the Bass Strait ferry of the time, s.s. Loongana, and from Burnie by trains belonging to the Emu Bay Railway, and the Mt Lyell Mining and Railway Company, all of which made their respective journeys in record times.

1961 Sydney, New South Wales – In a campaign to ban bikinis at Bondi Beach, inspectors employed by the Waverley Council were instructed to wear full-length swimming costumes similar to those of the 1930s.
