In 1954, in the Tsugaru Strait, Japan – The rail ferry Toya Maru sank during a typhoon, with the loss of 1,172 lives.
In 1968, an absolute speed limit of 65 miles per hour (104 km/h), was introduced in country areas throughout Tasmania.
In 1983, A catastrophe was narrowly avoided when a Soviet military officer, Stanislav Petrov, averted a worldwide nuclear war, by correctly identifying a report of six incoming nuclear missiles from the United States, as a computer error.
His decision to disobey his orders prevented an erroneous nuclear retaliation against the USA and it’s NATO allies.
► BORN THIS DAY…..
1922 in Brisbane, Queensland – Leonard Teale, radio, film and television actor. His radio roles included, in the 1950s, Superman/Clark Kent and Tarzan. He also appeared in the movies Smiley, Smiley Gets A Gun and the Bungala Boys.
Teale co-compered ABC radio’s children’s programme, and appeared in early Australian television productions such as Whiplash, and Consider Your Verdict, but is best remembered as Sergeant David Mackay in the Crawfords Production Homicide. (d. 1994)
1922 in Glendale, Arizona, U.S.A. – Martin David Robinson alias Marty Robbins, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and a very popular country and western singer for 40 years. Several of his songs became pop hits. Died 1982.
1926 in Santa Rosa, California U.S.A. – Gayle Peck alias Julie London, singer, and actress of stage, film and television, reknowned for her sensual voice. Her singing career was at its peak in the 1950s, although her acting career lasted over 35 years. Died 2000.
1945 in Washington, County Durham, England – Bryan Ferry, singer, musician, songwriter and actor, famous in the early 1970s as lead vocalist for the successful group Roxy Music. He continues to have a successful solo career.
1948 in Cambridge, England – Olivia Newton-John, Australian singer, actress and four-time Grammy-Award winner. Having sold over 100 million records,Olivia Newton-John was one of the best-selling artists in the second half of the 20th century. Died 2022.
► DIED THIS DAY…..
1991 in Escondido, California, U.S.A. – Richard Vaughn alias Billy Vaughn, musician and orchestra leader who charted 42 singles and 36 albums, beginning with 1958’s Sail Along Silvery Moon and ending with 1970’s Winter World of Love. Aged 72.
