► LOOKING at some notable events on 5 September, in 1968, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. – A 1958 Volkswagen Microbus, which had been modified for all-electric operation, was judged winner of the “Great Transcontinental Electric Car Race” after completing a 5150 km  trip from Pasadena, California.

The “Voltswagen” made the trip in 210 hours and made 53 battery recharging stops.

In 1974, in Sandy Bay, Tasmania – A new boiler which had been installed in a convent laundry exploded, caused 8 deaths and injuring many others.

In 1977, in Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S.A.  – The Voyager 1 space probe was launched to the planets Jupiter and Saturn, later to become the first to provide clear photographs of those planets and their moons.

It has since studied the boundaries of our Solar System and in 2012 became the first space probe to reach interstellar space.

Voyager 1 is travelling about 520 million kilometres per year and is expected to remain in contact with Earth until this year, when its power supply is expected to fail.
