BORN this day in 1899, in Cedar Valley, Missouri, U.S.A., Jimmy Angel, the aviator after whom the world’s tallest waterfall, the 979 metre Angel Falls in Venezuela, is named.
This waterfall is in a remote area, and was unknown outside the country until Angel flew past them in 1933.
He returned on 9th October 1937 with his wife and two other men, and, upon landing on the plateau near the top of the falls, their plane became bogged in soft mud and was unable to take off.
The party took 11 days to walk to the nearest settlement, but the aircraft remained in situ until 1970, when it was disassembled, air-lifted down by helicopters, and reassembled in an aviation museum in Maracay. The plane is now exhibited in front of Ciudad Bolivar airport in Venezuela. Jimmie Angel died in 1956. In 1960 his ashes were scattered over Angel Falls, in keeping with his wishes.
DIED this day in 1903 in Terry, South Dakota, U.S.A. – Martha Jane Canary, alias Calamity Jane, American frontierswoman. The source of her nickname is uncertain, but she may have acquired it as a result of her warnings to men that to offend her was to “court calamity.”
She was known by that nickname by 1876, because her arrival on the Wild Bill Hickok wagon train was reported in the Deadwood newspaper, the Black Hills Pioneer, on July 15 of that year with the headline, “Calamity Jane has arrived!” She was aged about 51.
DIED this day in 2015 in Estepona, Malaga, Spain – Priscilla White alias Cilla Black, singer, actress, media personality and popular light entertainer since 1963. She is most famous worldwide for her singles Anyone Who Had A Heart, You’re My World and Alfie. She was aged 72.

In 1928 in Coventry, England – The Morris Motor Company launched the first Morris Minor car.
In 1941 The first Jeep was produced by Willys-Overland Motor Company, making it the first purpose-built, four-wheel drive off-road vehicle. It inspired similar designs by other manufacturers, such as the Landrover, the next-oldest four-wheel drive.
In 1962 in Perth, West Australia – The city’s Lord Mayor complained that the 1956 Daimler car in which he would ride to the Commonwealth Games leaked, and the doors had a tendency to fly open. The vehicle had been specially built with a wooden frame, which had warped.
