During this edition, two chart-busters each hour, from the Top 40 charts of this week in 1977, and a mix of recent tracks from indie artists and other easy-listening music which you won’t hear on mainstream radio.
Having a birthday today, Roberta Lee Streeter alias Bobbie Gentry. She was born in 1942, in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, U.S.A. and became a singer-songwriter, noted as one of the first female country artists to write and produce her own material.
She had major hits in the 1960s with Ode To Billie Joe, Louisiana Man, I’ll Never Fall In Love Again and, dueting with Glen Campbell, All I Have To Do Is Dream.
Bobbie Gentry, turns 83 today.
And died this day in 2012, at the age of 68, on the Isle of Wight, England, Geoffrey Hughes, the actor best known as Onslow in the television sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, and as Vernon Scripps in the drama series Heartbeat.
Died this day in 2022, in London, England at the age of 88, Dion O’Brien alias Tom Springfield, singer, songwriter and member of the Springfields pop group of the early 60s before becoming a record producer and songwriter for the Seekers.
He wrote many of the Seekers’ major hits – I’ll Never Find Another You, A World Of Our Own, The Carnival Is Over and Walk with Me, and co-wrote Georgy Girl with Jim Dale.
In events on this day, in 1949 the world’s first jet-powered airliner, the de Havilland Comet, made it’s first flight.
Forward to 1953 and on this day the United States, the Peoples’ Republic of China, North Korea, and South Korea signed an armistice agreement at the Edwards Air Force Base in California, to bring an end to combat in the Korean War. Of the 2 million dead, 258 Australians were killed in action and 4 were missing, believed dead.
Major disruption on this day in 1964 when Queen Victoria Street in London, England, was evacuated and closed after an unexploded World War 2 German bomb was found between Charing Cross and Aldgate railway stations.
Soon after its discovery, a truck fell into the excavation and landed on the bomb, upside down. It was eventually removed for safe disposal
