LOOKING at some notable events on 25 July, in AVIATION on this day in 1909 Louis Bleriot made the first flight across the English Channel in a heavier-than-air machine.  He flew from Sangatte near Calais, to Dover in 37 minutes.

And in 2000, Air France flight 4590, a Concorde supersonic passenger jet, tragically crashed just after takeoff in Paris.  All 109 aboard, and 4 people on the ground, perished.  Although this was the only fatal accident in the aircraft’s 27 year history, it led to the permanent retirement of all remaining Concorde airliners.

In 1956, in the Atlantic Ocean, 48 km south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts U.S.A.,  the Italian liner SS Andrea Doria collided with the liner MS Stockholm in heavy fog, and sank the next day.
Of a total of 1,706 passengers and crew, 1,660 were rescued, and there were 46 fatalities.  A disaster of the magnitude of the 1912 Titanic sinking was avoided by the efficiency of the crew, better communications and the swift response from other vessels.
MS Stockholm was repaired, and after extensive modifications and passing through several owners, was eventually renamed Astoria.  Following the bankruptcy of  it’s owners in 2020, she was sent for auction in Rotterdam, but attracted no bids.  Astoria was sold in June 2025, and  was to be towed to a shipbreakers yard in Belgium.

And BORN on this day in 1942 in Melbourne, Victoria, Bruce Woodley, singer-songwriter, guitarist, banjo and mandolin player, famous as a founding member of the Seekers.  He turns 83 today.

DIED on this day in 1995 in Hammond, Louisiana, U.S.A., Charlie Rich, rockabilly/jazz/country singer and musician known for his 1973 hits Behind Closed Doors and The Most Beautiful Girl.  Rich was aged 62.
