1969 Da Nang, Vietnam, Cathy Wayne, 20 year old Australian pop singer, who was shot by a U S Marine while performing for Allied troops.

1969 New York USA – Roy Hamilton, 1950s pop singer, aged 40

2005 Redmond, Washington USA – James Doohan actor best known as Scotty in the television series Star Trek.  Aged 85.

EVENTS THIS DAY –

1969 The lunar module Eagle landed on the Moon’s surface and became the first manned craft to land on another celestial body.

1976 The Viking 1 space probe successfully landed on the planet Mars and returned the first close-up photographs of the planet’s surface.

1994 Scientists on Earth watched intently as Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which had previously broken into more than 20 fragments, collided with the planet Jupiter.
