ON THIS DAY

1952 – Heavy rain throughout Tasmania caused flooding which closed the Lake and Bass Highways, while Western Junction and Cambridge aerodromes were closed, with incoming planes diverted to Devonport.

1954 – Hobart recorded the State’s lowest maximum, with 7 C.   The freezing temperatures extended into the highlands, with Lake Sorell being reported as being iced over.
New Norfolk was enveloped in heavy fog, with frost resembling snow covering large areas for the entire day.  Domestic water tanks and pipes were frozen.
