1811  Pittsdown, New York, U.S.A. – Isaac Merritt Singer, inventor, actor and entrepreneur who made major improvements to the sewing machine – and faounder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company.  Died 1875.

1933  Shreveport, Louisiana, U.S.A. – Floyd Cramer, pianist who popularised the “slip note” style.  Died 1997.

1939  Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England – John Cleese, actor, comedian, writer and film producer, famed for the Fawlty Towers sitcom.  Turns 85

DIED:

1990  Barcelona, Spain – Xavier Cugat, Catalan-American bandleader, violinist, arranger and cartoonist.  (Aged 90)

2019  Bendigo, Victoria – Anne Phelan, award winning television actress who appeared in many Australian productions, comedian, writer and film producer, famed for the Fawlty Towers sitcom.  Aged 75.

EVENTS:

1953  Woomera, South Australia – Britain exploded a second nuclear bomb, west of the rocket range.

1956  Sydney, New South Wales – Australia’s first television station, TCN channel 9, officially opened with daily programme transmission between the hours of 7 p.m. till 10 p.m.

1964  Hunters Hill, Sydney, New South Wales – Hundreds of residents were evacuated as a fire raged at an oil storage depot.  Workers were ordered to “get out for their lives” after the fire, which was believed to have been started by static electricity, broke out.
