12 August 2023

Part of this day has been spent putting the finishing touches to my next Music Marathon, which will be between 6 a.m. and Midday on Friday, September 1,
when I sit-in for Bruce Lamb during the Breakky programme, which precedes my own shift.

Bruce won’t be available to do his programme for a few weeks later this month, so Nigel Jones and I will cover his shifts on alternate weeks.

As usual, in the next edition and in future, I cover topics as varied as some of the roadworks you are likely to encounter on the roads; planets which can be seen at night;
the day in history; and as of last Friday a new one, Railway Roundup.

The latter is a brief run-down on train operations by hard-working volunteers in Heritage railways throughout the State.

But back to the present, and on Music Unlimited at 6 a.m., a few of the artists you will hear are the Everly Brothers, Bobby Vee, Paul Simon.

In the Comfort Zone, Patti Page;   in the Country Patch, Ferlin Husky;  and in Album Corner,  John Denver.

In Valley Sunrise from 7.00 through to 9.00, easy listening with listener requests after 8.00.  Please call me on 6261 2000 during the programme.

Friday, August 11….

DIGRESSING FOR A MOMENT……..

A treasured photograph which was discovered by sheer chance, about 20 years ago; it could easily have been lost back then, for all time.

My great-grandparents’ wedding photo, Launceston, Tasmania, now a little over 140 years ago.

Friday, August 4

In Edition 376 of Friday Morning Radio on TYGA-FM 98.9………

I’m reverting to the previous format, which was a mix of selected tracks from indie artists, easy-listening tracks from my home library, and memories,
rather than splitting them into separate hours.

Artists to be featured today are as diverse as Jimmy Little, Louis Armstrong, Susan Boyle, and George Hamilton IV.

In the brief Sky High segment, a run-down on which planets can be seen and when, in the event of clear skies.

Since the beginning of the year, I’ve been running the Diamond Classic plays, in which I play a track each hour which was charting on the date of broadcast
60 years ago.

This edition of the programme will feature the first of a series of Fabulous Fifty Gold tracks, which were on the charts exactly 50 years ago.

Today’s playlist will be entered on this blog later in the day. Scroll down for some previous playlists. Would you like to leave a request for a future programme?

Outside radio reception range? You can tune in to TYGA-FM anytime, anywhere, at www.tygafm.org.au

The Derwent Valley’s weather outlook for Friday – Showers, a top of an unseasonal 17 C.

In New Norfolk at 8.00 p.m. Thursday, it’s cloudy, 14 C.

Today’s header photo was taken recently, during a stroll around the Risdon Brook water reservoir on the eastern outskirts of Hobart.

29 July 2023

Sunday, 30 July 2023

This month has been declared the warmest July on record in Tasmania, with temperatures 2 C above average and it’s certainly been a far cry from July 1986 when, on the 26th, snow fell to sea level in Southern Tasmania.  People woke up that morning to a white blanket over everything, and with transport disrupted.

One enterprising bloke skiied to work, over the snow-laden Tasman Bridge!

It’s an event which has never been repeated since, and probably never will be.

Over in Nova Scotia, Canada, people take much heavier winter snowfalls in their stride.  Coming from Halifax, Nova Scotia, in this morning’s edition of Music Unlimited with Ian MacPhee at 6.00, are the Three Degrees, Dean Martin, Berlin, Al Hirt, and in the regular Country Patch, Leroy Van Dyke and Patsy Cline.

In Edition 740 of Valley Sunrise which follows at 7.00,  Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Paul Anka, Peter Sarstedt, many indie artists and more, including listener requests after 8.00.  The number to call is 6261-2000.
