Track Talk……

Today’s playlist opened with a track from Albert Hammond, a prolific songwriter who had several high-rating hits in the early 1970s, such as Down By The River and It Never Rains in Southern California.

This morning, listener Celia was quick to request John Williamson’s A Christmas Photo, very popular at this time of year, hence the large number of previous plays.

On the matter of requests, as from today I am playing them during the programme as received, and not so much during a devoted segment, which I have traditionally done during my entire 17-year radio “career”.

I am also playing occasional past requests, which may date to my earliest programmes on TYGA-FM 98.9.  I have not kept any notes as to who requested what, other than in my neck-top “computer.”

But, in that line, I seem to recall that listener Myrtle was the principal caller who requested tracks from Boyzone;  one of those was included today.

You will notice occasional Backtracks;  these are recordings by indie artists, who are not aligned to any major recording company.  Although very talented, they often have a hard job getting their tracks heard on mainstream radio – the “commercials” and the A.B.C.

Enter, community radio, and I’m one presenter who is pleased to be able to give them an airing, although I do try to keep the tracks I select for airplay compatible with the easy-listening nature of my programmes.

Another notable track played this morning was Celine Dion’s Power of Love.  As shown in the playlist, that has been played on Valley Sunrise no less than 31 times.  On many of those occasions, it was requested by The Fox of Bridgewater (now deceased), in memory of his young grand-daughter, who passed away some years ago.

To be part of my programmes, you’re welcome to contact me through this blog (there’s provision to do so at the foot of each post), or via the Ray Hewitt Valley Sunrise Facebook page, or by calling me at the studio during my programmes on 6261 2000.

1 DECEMBER IN HISTORY:

EVENTS

1864  Brisbane, Queensland – The Great Fire of Brisbane destroyed the city block bounded by Queen, George, Elizabeth and Albert Streets.  Fifty houses were lost, together with two banks, three hotels, and many other businesses.  The fire started in the cellar of a drapery store and quickly spread through the predominately wooden buildings.  No lives were lost.

1955  Montgomery, Alabama U.S.A. – Seamstress Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man, and was arrested for violating the city’s racial segregation laws.  This sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which resulted in a crippling financial deficit for the city’s public transit system, because the city’s black population formed the bulk of the system’s paying customers

1957  New South Wales – A bushfire destroyed much of the holiday towns of Leura and Wentworth Falls.  The entire population of Leura, 4,500 people, was evacuated.

1968  Blue Mountains, New South Wales – Bushfires in the Grose Valley and near Glenbrook threatened the towns of Lawson, Wentworth Falls, Leura and Katoomba.

Valley Sunrise Edition 808
0600 ~ 0900 AEDT

Palana Bay, Flinders Island.

[For the geographically unaware, Flinders Island is the largest of the Furneaux group, at the eastern end of Bass Strait.

These islands were originally a mountain range on the low “land bridge” which connected Tasmania to mainland Australia, until 10,000 years ago.

This photo was taken by a relative, in 1978. I assume the locality has changed little since then.]

THIS EDITION’S PLAYLIST

Due to a technical hitch, today’s programme started off on last Sunday’s playlist; hence, the first two tracks were repeated from that day. I had to make the necessary corrections “on the run,” as the programme went to air.

EVENTS:

1970  The Soviet Union landed Lunokhod 1 on the Moon’s Mare Imbrium, from the orbiting Luna 17 craft.  Lunokhod 1 was the first roving remote-controlled robot to land on another world.  It resembled a toilet pan on eight independently operated wheels.

It travelled over 10½ kilometres on the Moon, at a top speed on 100 metres an hour, and it’s four cameras returned over 20,000 images.  It operated for 11 months, instead of the planned 3 months.

Contact with Lunokhod 1 was lost on 14 September 1971.
