1977 Miami, Florida, U.S.A. – Despite the ordinarily tropical climate, snow fell for the only time in the city’s recorded history. In the United States, snow has fallen further south only on the high mountains in Hawaii

1978 Emden, Germany – The last German-made Volkswagen Beetle left the VW plant, but production continued in Latin America, until 2003.

2006 The New Horizons probe was launched by NASA at 58,536 km/h, the fastest launch speed ever recorded for a man-made object.  It passed Jupiter on February 28, 2007, and Saturn’s orbit on June 8, 2008. It arrived at Pluto on July 14, 2015, and became the first spacecraft to study the planet Pluto and its moons, Charon, Nix, Hydra.  It has since continued into the Kuiper Belt, to study various bodies there.

1923 London, England – Kathleen Mary Corkery alias Carol Raye, Australian-based theatre and television actress and comedienne.  Died 2024.

1933 New York, U.S.A. – Sonia Phyllis Hurwitz alias Shari Lewis, ventriloquist, puppeteer and childrens’ television show hostess, of the 1960s and 1990s. .  Died 1998.

1942 Mittagong, New South Wales – Ita Buttrose, journalist, businesswoman and founding editor of Cleo, a magazine aimed at young single women, and later, editor of the Australian Womens’ Weekly.  Former chairperson of the ABC.

DIED:

1997  Las Cruces, New Mexico, U.S.A. – Clyde Tombaugh, astronomer who discovered the dwarf planet Pluto in 1930, and many asteroids.  Some of his ashes are aboard the New Horizons spacecraft, which was launched in 2006 to flyby Pluto.  Aged 90.

2019 England – Windsor Davies, actor, well known for his role as Battery Sergeant Major Williams in the 70s television sitcom It Ain’t Half Hot Mum.  Aged 88.

    Bath, England – Derek Fowlds, actor best known for his roles as civil servant Bernard Woolley in the popular British television comedies Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister, but more recently as Oscar Blaketon in the long-running police drama Heartbeat.  Aged 82.

2023 Geelong, Victoria – Renee Geyer, soul, pop and rhythm and blues singer.  Aged 69.

1889 Cloncurry, Queensland – Recorded Australia’s highest temperature to that date;  52.7 C.

1912  Robert Falcon Scott reached the South Pole, one month after Roald Amundsen.

1940  London, England – The Thames River froze for the first time since 1888.

1952  Hobart, Tasmania – Elephants from a visiting circus were used to remove a building, to enable a start to be made on construction of the new Hobart railway station.

1966  Near Palomares, Spain – An American B-52 bomber aircraft collided with a Stratotanker, dropping four unarmed 70-kiloton nuclear bombs. 

1968  Melbourne, Victoria – The Seekers were named Australians of the Year.

1980  Aviation history was made when Australia’s first female commercial pilot commenced duty.  Debbie Wardley, aged 26, co-piloted a Fokker Friendship owned by Ansett Airlines on a return flight from Alice Springs to Darwin.  This marked the conclusion of a 15-month legal battle which had previously prevented her from taking the controls.

2004  Darwin, Northern Territory – The first freight train arrived from Adelaide, after the extension of the Central Australian Railway from  Alice Springs opened.

1934   Perth West Australia – The temperature rose to 43.4 C during the hottest January day for 37 years.  Exactly 44 years later, in 1978, the city had it’s hottest day then on record, at 44.7 C.  That, in turn was exceeded on 23 February 1991, when a maximum of 46.7 C was recorded.

1950  London, England – 64 crewmen perished when the submarine Truculent collided with a Swedish oil tanker in the Thames Estuary and sank

1955 South Australia – Many homes were destroyed by major bushfires near Adelaide, including the vice-regal summer house in Marble Hill. 

1965  Wanda Beach, Sydney, New South Wales – A double homicide occurred in which two 15-year-old girls, Christine Sharrock and Marriane Schmidt, were murdered.  This case has never been solved despite an unprecedented £10,000 reward.

1946 London, England – The first General Assembly of the United Nations opened, with 51 nations represented

1949  Melbourne Victoria – The Orient liner Orcades arrived after a record setting maiden voyage from Tilbury, England, of 26 days.  The vessel predominately served on the U K, Australia, New Zealand route, carrying many migrants.  Built in 1948, Orcades was broken up in Taiwan in 1973.

1949  U.S.A. – New microgroove 7-inch records were released by the Columbia and RCA Victor companies.  Although the discs were the same size, they played at different speeds;  RCA Victor’s at 45 r.p.m. and Columbia’s at 33 and one third r.p.m.  Meanwhile, ordinary shellac 78 r.p.m. records continued in production.

1954  Groton Connecticut U.S.A. –  The first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, was launched by the First Lady of the United States, Mamie Eisenhower

1962  Peru – A massive avalanche swept down the side of Mt Huascaran, devastating the village of Huaraz and causing the loss of over 3,000 lives.  The same village had been struck by a similar disaster 20 years previously. + 

1968  Canberra – John Gorton was sworn in as Australia’s 19th Prime Minister of Australia after the disappearance and presumed drowning of Prime Minister Harold Holt.

EVENTS

1943  Albury, New South Wales – Police renewed an investigation into the unsolved “Pyjama Girl” murder of 1934, in which an unidentified body had been found in a culvert near Albury, after the victim was identified as Linda Agostini, a young lady who had been reported missing a week before the discovery.
Soon afterwards, the victim’s husband, Antonio Agostini was arrested and charged.  He was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 6 years’ imprisonment, but released in 1948 and deported to Italy.

1975 Hobart, Tasmania – The bulk ore carrier MV Lake Illawarra struck the Tasman Bridge, resulting in the deaths of 7 crewmen and 5 motorists who were driving over the bridge at the time.  This left the Bridgewater bridge as the only road crossing of the Derwent near Hobart.

2005  Palomar Observatory, California, U.S.A. – Eris, the largest known dwarf planet in the solar system, was discovered.  Eris is approximately 2,500 kilometres in diameter, has one moon, named Dysnomia, and is currently about three times as far from the sun as Pluto.

BORN 1923 Coogee, New South Wales – Charles Tingwell, alias Bud Tingwell, film, television, theatre and radio actor, and one of the veterans of Australian film. After his first motion picture appearance in 1946, he was in over 100 films and numerous television programmes in both the United Kingdom and Australia.  Died 2009.

BORN 1950 Belgrade, Serbia – Vesna Vulovic, former air stewardess who became the only survivor of a plane crash and the holder of a world record for suriving the highest fall without a parachute, after falling over 10,000 metres inside portion of an aircraft after it exploded in mid-air.   Vulovic recovered from her injuries to become a prominent political campaigner.  Died 2016.

DIED THIS DAY:

1980  DIED Kenya, Africa –  Friederike Victoria Gessner alias Joy Adamson, naturalist, artist and author best known for her book, Born Free, which related her experiences raising a lion cub named Elsa.  Born Free was printed in several languages and made into an Academy Award-winning movie of the same name, which starred husband-and-wife actors Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna.  (Murdered,  69)

2014 DIED  Burbank, California, U.S.A. – Phil Everly, one of the duo the Everly Brothers, rock and roll performers known for steel string guitars and close harmony singing.  The Everly Brothers were a highly successful rock and roll duo whose greatest period was between 1957 and 1965.   (Aged 74)

2021  DIED, Birkenhead, England – Gerry Marsden, musician best known as leader of the 1960s Merseybeat band Gerry and the Pacemakers.  (Aged 78)

1956 Paris, France – A fire damaged the top section of the Eiffel Tower.

1928  Colebrook, Tasmania – Four express passenger trains were held up on the Main Line near Colebrook, when an axle of Oatlands- Hobart rail motor broke, blocking the line.

1967  Launceston, Tasmania – A priceless bronze sculpture was stolen from an exhibition held at the Queen Victoria Art Gallery during a 15 minute period whilst it was unguarded.

Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. – Mary Tyler Moore, actress, primarily known for her role in The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961–1966), and for her later role in the Mary Tyler Moore Show  (1970–1977) as Mary Richards, a single woman who worked as a local news producer in Minneapolis.  (d. 2017).

1946  Hampstead, London, England – Marianne Evelyn Faithfull, award winning English singer, songwriter and actress whose career has spanned five decades.  Turns 78.

EVENTS

1876  Ashtabula, Ohio, U.S.A. – In one of America’s worst railway accidents, a bridge over the  Ashtabula River collapsed as an express train was passing over.  The leading locomotive made it across the bridge, while the second locomotive and 11 carriages fell 23 metres into the river.  This, and a fire ignited by heating stoves inside the wooden carriages, resulted in the loss of 92 lives.

A subsequent inquiry found the bridge had been poorly designed and built, the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway Company was criticised for the way the carriages were heated and the Ashtabula Chief Fire Officer was censured for not extinguishing the fire.

1877 Melbourne, Victoria – A new word, “Larrikin” was added to the Australian vernacular to describe hoodlums involved in petty crime.  Whereas the “Rough” of European cities avoided the locality of Police Courts, the Australian larrikin deliberately harassed police constables on the beat and crowded the Courts to display open interest in the outcome of trials involving friends

1981 Rancho Mirage, California, U.S.A. – Hoagy Carmichael, American composer, pianist, singer, actor and bandleader.  Of his many compositions, Stardust, The Nearness Of You, Georgia On My Mind, and Heart and Soul are amongst the most recorded American songs of all time.  Aged 82

EVENTS:

1979  The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to support a ruling pro-Soviet regime.  Over the following nine years, a million civilians were killed, 90,000 Mujahideen rebels, 18,000 Afghan troops, and over 14,000 Soviet troops.

1996  Lone French yachtsman Raphael Dinelli was rescued from his sinking yacht in treacherous conditions 2,200 kilometres south of West Australia.  Dinelli spent 36 hours in knee-deep water before being located by an RAAF Orion aircraft, which dropped a survival kit including an inflatable raft.

1901  St Petersburgh, Russia – Andre Kostelanetz, American popular orchestra conductor and arranger, one of the pioneers of easy listening music. Kostelanetz was known for arranging and recording light classical pieces for mass audiences, as well as orchestral versions of songs and show tunes from Broadway.  Over 50 million of his recordings were sold and his works became staples of beautiful music radio stations.   Died 1980.

1949  Douglas, Isle of Man – Twins, Maurice Ernest Gibb and Robin Hugh Gibb, musicians and singer-songwriters, best known as members of the trio the Bee Gees, which were formed with their brother Barry.  The trio got their start in Australia, found major success upon return to England and became one of the most successful pop groups of all time.

Maurice died 12 Jan 2003 age 53;   Robin died 20 May 2012 age 62.

EVENTS

1943  Hobart, Tasmania – The floating concrete pontoon bridge across the Derwent between Hobart and Bellerive was opened.  Crossing it was subject to a toll payment, which was discontinued on 31 December 1948.  It was the first of it’s type in the world and remained in use until 17 August 1964, upon the opening of the Tasman Bridge.

1964 Palmdale, California, U.S.A. – The first flight of the SR-71 Blackbird aircraft took place.  This was an advanced, long range, Mach 3+ reconnaissance aircraft, which operated at high speeds and altitudes to allow it to outrace threats.  If a missile was detected, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate.  The SR-71 was in service with the U.S. Air Force until 1998, during which time, 12 of the 32 aircraft were destroyed in accidents, but none were lost to enemy action.

1989  Berlin, Germany – The Brandenburg Gate re-opened after nearly 30 years, effectively ending the division of East and West Germany

1973  Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. – Walden Robert Cassotto, alias Bobby Darin, singer, songwriter, and actor , who performed in a range of music genres.  His career started as a songwriter for Connie Francis, but he later recorded his first million-seller Splish Splash in 1958.  Later, Dream Lover, Mack The Knife, and Beyond The Sea brought him world fame.  Died from complications due to heart surgery, Los Angeles, California, Aged 37

** 1999  Madison, Tennessee, U.S.A. – Hank Snow, Canadian country singer who during a 50 year career charted over 70 singles on the Billboard charts and recorded 140 albums between 1950 and 1980.  (Heart failure, age 85)

*** 2020  Hailey, Idaho, U.S.A. – David Stuart Chadwick alias Chad Stuart, part of the 1960s folk rock duo, Chad & Jeremy.  (Aged 79)

1894 Jeparit Victoria – Robert Menzies, Australia’s longest serving Prime Minister, having occupied the position for a total of 18 years, 5 months and 12 days, and the foundation leader of the Liberal Party.  Died 1978.

1952 Somerset, England – Jennifer Agutter, actress best known for her role as Sister Julienne in the BBC drama series Call The Midwife.  Turns 72.

1951 Hobart, Tasmania – Internal fittings of the historic Theatre Royal were removed and sold as part of a refurbishment.

1957 Sydney, New South Wales – Seven deaths occurred, and 70 people were treated for heat exhaustion during a heat wave, in which the city recorded a maximum of 42 C.  This was Sydney’s hottest day since January 1939, and the city’s third hottest day then on record.

1984  Near the town of Todmorden in England – One of the largest underground fires in transportation history occurred inside the Summit railway tunnel, after a train of tanker waggons loaded with over a million litres of petrol derailed.  At the height of the fire, pillars of flame 45 metres high rose from ventilation shafts above.  There were no injuries or deaths.
