EVENTS ON THIS DAY

1940  England – The first evacuated British troops arrived from Dunkirk, France.

1948  Near Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. – A 61 metre section of a dam on the Columbia River collapsed, inundating and destroying Vanport City, a public housing precinct.  Fifteen lives were lost and tens of thousands were left homeless.  It is currently the site of Delta Park, a sports and recreational area  and the Portland International Raceway.

1959 Auckland, New Zealand – The Auckland Harbour Bridge crossing Waitemata Harbour, was officially opened by the-then Governor General of New Zealand, Lord Cobham.  It is 1,020 metres in length, 43 metres above high tide, and had an overhead clearance of 4.8 metres.

1966 Surveyor 1, the first U.S. spacecraft to achieve a soft landing on an extraterrestrial body, was launched.  It landed in the Mare Procellarum, or Ocean of Storms region of the Moon and transmitted 11,237 photographs to Earth.

1971 Cape Kennedy, Florida, U.S.A. – The space probe Mariner 9 was launched to map 70% of the surface of the planet Mars.  It arrived on November 14th of the same year, and became the first Earthly spacecraft to orbit another planet.  Mariner 9 remained in orbit after it’s mission ended in October 1972, and it is believed to have entered the Martian atmosphere and crashed onto the surface around 2020.

1928  Broken Hill, New South Wales – Kevin Charles Hart alias Pro Hart, artist whose works are admired for capturing the spirit of the outback.  He received the nickname “Professor” (hence “Pro”) in his younger days, when he was known as an inventor.  Died 2006.

1936  Bristol, England – Peter Ellis, director and actor of stage and television best known for his role as Chief Superintendent Brownlow in the long-running police drama The Bill.  Turns 89.

DIED

1953  Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. –  Dooley Wilson, American singer who sang the tune As Time Goes By in the movie Casablanca .  Aged 67.

2003  London, England – Michael Peter Hayes, alias Mickie Most, singer and record producer for numerous English artists such as Herman’s Hermits, the Animals, Nashville Teens, Donovan, Lulu, and the Jeff Beck Group.   Aged 64.
