1906  San Francisco, California,  U.S.A. – An earthquake and a subsequent fire destroyed much of the city.

1912  New York, U.S.A. – The Cunard liner RMS Carpathia arrived with 705 survivors from the sinking of the RMS Titanic

1930 London, England – BBC Radio announced there was no news on that day.

1958  Redfern, Sydney, New South Wales – More than 90 families fled when a cloud of ammonia gas, which had escaped from a burst pipe in an ice cream factory, descended upon their homes.

1966 The first Australian National Service conscripts left for Vietnam

1966 Australia’s 10th Holden model, the HR, was released for sale.  Hobart price for the Special sedan was $2,282, the station wagon $2,464 and the top of the range Premier X2 automatic, $3,007.

1970 England – British Leyland announced that production of the Morris Minor, then England’s longest-running car, would cease by the end of the year.

1946 London, England – Hayley Mills, former child star famed for her performances in Tiger Bay (1959), Pollyanna (1960) and several Disney movies, including The Parent Trap of 1961.

DIED THIS DATE

1955 Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A. – Albert Einstein, physicist, philospoher and author, widely regarded as one of the most influential and best known scientists and intellectuals of all time. (Aged 76)

1992 Fulham, London, England – Frankie Howerd, comedian whose career spanned 60 years.  In an obituary for Howerd which was run by some newspapers, fellow comedian Benny Hill was quoted as regretting Howerd’s passing.  That quote was released by Hill’s agent, who was unaware that his client had also just died. (Aged 75)

2002 Colla Micheri, Italy –Thor Heyerdahl, adventurer notable for the 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition, in which he sailed in a raft 8,000 km from South America to the Tuamotu Islands, near Tahiti.  The aim of the expedition was to demonstrate that people could have made long voyages, thousands of years ago   (Aged 87)
