EVENTS

1951  Arbroath, Scotland – The Stone of Scone, the stone upon which Scottish monarchs were traditionally crowned, was found on the site of the altar of Arbroath Abbey after Scottish nationalist students had removed it from its place in Westminster Abbey

1960  Sales of television receivers commenced in Hobart, with crowds flocking to city electrical stores. 

1970 Cape Canavaral, Florida, U.S.A. – Apollo 13, crewed by Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert was launched toward the Moon.      An oxygen tank in the spacecraft subsequently exploded en route, forcing the crew to abort the mission and return to Earth in 4 days.

1979  Tanzanian troops took Kampala, the capital of Uganda; the brutal dictator Idi Amin, who had ruled for the previous 7 years, fled the country. 

1984 Canberra –  Advance Australia Fair was adopted as the official Australian national anthem.

1890 Whitechapel, London, England – Joseph Merrick, known as “The Elephant Man”  due to massive deformities which developed during the early years of his life.

As a teenager and adult, he was rejected by most people due to his grotesque appearance and disabilities, so being exhibited in a circus as a human novelty was one of the few ways he could make a living.   (Aged 27)
