BORN

1937   Bakersfield, California U.S.A. – Merle Haggard, country music singer, guitarist and songwriter.  Died 6 April 2016


DIED

1996  Dallas, Texas, U.S.A.  –Greer Garson, award-winning actress during World War 2.  As one of MGM’s’s major stars of the 40s, Garson received seven Academy-Award nominations, winning the Best Actress award for Mrs Minniver (1942).  Aged 91.

1998  Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A. – Virginia Wynette Pugh alias Tammy Wynette, country singer-songwriter known as the First Lady of Country Music.  Her best-known song, Stand By Your Man, was one of the biggest selling hit singles by a woman in the history of the country genre.   Aged 55.

2005  Monaco – Rainier III, Prince of Monaco for almost 56 years, making him one of the longest ruling monarchs in European history.  He was best known outside Europe for having married American actress Grace Kelly.  Aged  81.

2014  Studio City, California, U.S.A. – Joseph Yule Jr alias Mickey Rooney, film, television, and stage actor who performed since he was a small child.  His career spanned almost 90 years, one of the longest for any actor.  Aged 93.

EVENTS

1965  Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S.A. Intelsat 1, the first communications satellite to be placed in geosynchronous orbit was launched.  It was the first to provide direct contact by telephone, television and facsimile between Europe and North America, and was deactivated in 1969.  It remains in a geosynchronous orbit over the Atlantic Ocean

1966  Hobart, Tasmania – A brand new Morris 1100 sedan was wrecked when the brakes failed as it was being driven off the freighter Seaway King, prior to delivery to a car dealership.  The car dived nose-first into the Derwent and the driver made an exit through a window.


1973  Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S.A. – Pioneer 11 space probe was launched to study the asteroid belt, the planets Jupiter and Saturn, solar wind and cosmic rays.  It is now following an escape trajectory from the solar system and there is no longer any communication with the spacecraft, the last being in November 1995.

It is carrying a plaque with a message from humankind, so if it is ever found by extraterrestrial intelligences, it will provide information about its origin. The plaque includes nude figures of a man, a woman, and a diagram of the Sun and Earth in the galaxy.
